FNL Foundation Marks Mazingira Day with a Fruit Tree Orchard at Baraka Primary School
In celebration of Mazingira Day 2025, the Faith Norah Lukosi Foundation (FNL) led a transformative tree planting and environmental education event at Baraka Primary School in Makadara Subcounty, Nairobi. The Foundation established a fruit tree orchard comprising 100 avocado, guava, mango, and strawberry trees, promoting both environmental sustainability and nutrition in schools while nurturing young environmental champions.
This project, implemented in partnership with Onagi Comrades Alliance (OCA), the Makadara Subcounty Administration, and supported by the National Youth Service, is part of FNL’s broader Trees for Life Initiative — a program designed to green Nairobi, build climate resilience, and support President William Samoei Ruto’s 15 Billion Trees by 2032 target.
Environmental Education for a Greener Generation
As part of the event, the Foundation conducted a hands-on environmental education session with learners and community members. The session focused on the importance of tree planting, the 3Rs — Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, and the correct techniques for planting and caring for seedlings — critical lessons for ensuring sustainability and high seedling survival rates.
Participants were guided through the proper process of planting seedlings:
-
Water the seedling in the potting bag to moisten the roots and reduce transplanting shock.
-
Gently massage the potting bag to loosen the soil.
-
Turn the seedling upside down carefully, supporting the stem to prevent breakage.
-
Slide off the potting bag slowly, without disturbing the root ball.
-
Place the seedling upright in the hole, cover gently with soil, and ensure the root collar is level with the ground.
-
Water again after planting to help the soil settle.
-
Preserve and reuse the potting bag to reduce waste and reinforce sustainable practices.
Each learner adopted a fruit tree and committed to nurturing it to maturity — an approach that builds environmental responsibility and leadership from a young age.
Community Partnership and Support
The event saw remarkable participation from local and national stakeholders, including Assistant County Commissioners led by Mr. Zachary Abuga, area chiefs, the Administrative Police, and the National Youth Service, who joined hands with Team FNL and the school community.
FNL extends appreciation to the Baraka Primary School fraternity for their collaboration and dedication, as well as to all learners for their enthusiasm and commitment to environmental stewardship.
The Trees for Life Initiative: Growing Impact in Nairobi
The Trees for Life Initiative is one of the Foundation’s flagship programs aimed at:
-
Integrating environmental education and climate action in schools.
-
Establishing fruit tree orchards to promote sustainable food systems.
-
Mobilizing community-led greening efforts in informal settlements across Nairobi.
By combining education, community participation, and environmental action, the Faith Norah Lukosi Foundation is creating a model for sustainable urban reforestation in Kenya.
“When we teach children to plant and care for trees, we are cultivating a generation that values nature and sustainability,” said Faith Norah Lukosi, Founder of the Foundation.
